Kohler Oil Filters - Pre-lubed Rubber Gasket???
I have a 2018 XT1 with a 22hp? 7000 series Kohler. I just changed by oil and installed a new Kohler 12 050 01-S filter. I noted that the rubber gasket has spots of oil/lube on it. Huh???
I ordered two of the oil filters so I went out and looked at the unused one. See photos below. It also has spots of oil/grease??? I am pretty sure these are OEM (not knockoffs). Note that a clear plastic cover that goes over the open end is not shown in the photo below. Is the oil there so you don't have to coat the gasket with oil (I did anyhow of course), or does it serve another purpose? Helps hold the plastic cover (not shown) in place??? Inquiring minds want to know... |

Yes gasket prelube.
Some ppl are not versed on coating a gasket with oil to insure proper tightness/sealing. Also you will find better quality oil seals of various manufactures will have the lip area coated with light grease so the seal will not be damaged upon dry start up. Also double lip seals of better quality have grease between the lips. |

+1 on lubing the oring its a step that not only aids in the fluid sealing but also lubricates the rubber so you dont pinch distort the gasket when tightening . I also recommend only going hand tight on filters. No need to crank them super tight. Been changing my own oils for 40 years. Last tip always ensure you have the old rubber ring tefoved from the engine block face. The rubber ring ocassionally sticks to the block surface and if you install your new filter on top of the old gasket it will blow out from pressure and thats a bad situation.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
