Default Original mower deck

I just purchased an original with a mower deck. It came with another deck for an original but this one has a chain instead of a belt timing the blades. Has anyone seen this before? It looks factory.

A Cogged Timing Belt was OEM on this 38" Mower Deck. Anything else is a modification.

Default Original mower deck
I have an original with a 38 in timed deck but it has a chain instead of a belt for timing. I can't find any info on this. Has anyone else come across one of these? It looks factory, and everything else is original.

The original owner of mine was a mill wright and he had converted it to a large roller chain... he was cheap, didn't want to buy the expensive cogged belt. But he had plenty of sprockets and chains laying around..

It worked but it was noisy and not so smooth at higher speeds..

I converted it back to the belt years ago.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
