Hydro Transmission Check Valve
Hello. I have a IH made 782 that has oil coming out of the small hole in top of the check valves. Is it common to have both of the valves to start leaking at the same time? Is it possible to rebuild these valves or do they need replaced with new valves? I see used valves on eBay all the time and wonder if that way is an option. Also, see there are auto and manual check valves and wonder what is the difference. Will the manual valve work where a auto valve was used before? Thanks for any help you can give me.

They can be rebuilt and it sounds like your O-rings are bad. The rings should only be a few bucks. The manual ones lock up a few seconds after the tractor is shut off and require a dump lever to release or open them up, whereas the automatic ones do not lock up when the tractor is shut off--which has caused a lot of cubs to take a quick, unexpected ride down a hill to the surprise of the owners who went in to get a quick drink!

You can put either valve in..... but you would have to take the tunnel cover off and push them down manually if you ever need to push the tractor. Probably best just to stick with the original style. This company here has been recommended several times on this site. Probably the cheapest you can get them for.

If you are interested in new replacements and not concerned about them valves being stainless steel, then a good source for a reasonable price is:

The company that Jonathan linked to will also rebuild your check valves for about half the price of a new one.

Ditto on the rebuilds, having very good luck with those so far. I don't see these services on his site, but he was also working on a rebuildable valve that had a tiny snap ring on the end so you could simply replace o-rings and springs yourself. I've got a couple of the prototypes around the shop.

Does anyone sell a kit for the replacement parts?

The ebay seller (links above) we are discussing at one time had kits. Just so newcomers are informed, the valves are not rebuildable to the average Joe. The end is crimped shut, and must be cut open on a lathe, the parts refurbished and then the cap put back on with a few tiny spot welds.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
