Default 1872 vs 2182?

Hey guys, I have a nice running Cub 1872. I also picked up a 2182 the other day that's also in decent shape but not quite as nice as the 1872. I have a nice 50c deck with the 1872 and a decent 60" Haban on the 2182. I've been leaning toward keeping the 2182, but find myself liking the 1872 a little better, because it's in a little better shape and I like the style of the older model better. What are your thoughts, guys? I'll be mowing a couple of yards that have thick, fast growing grass. I want to be able to mow at a decent speed, and have the best cut possible, and throw out the grass nice and far without windrowing. What are your preferences on the 50c vs the 60" Haban? If I put the Haban on the 1872, would I have enough power to run it?

Put the wg600 and haban in the 1872. Put the others on the 2182. Or not... either way, Nightow1 has a 2182 and haban deck. The thing is just a Monster in every way. I love it tough call.

1872 would handle the haban ok if the grass wasnt very tall or wet. Those decks have a bit more suction than the 50c did. Takes power.

IF....the 1872 has a chassis serial number of <821,100, then the 190-374-100 (60" Haban) will mount and work.

Cutting quality always relies on a number of factors. As mentioned prior, grass height, and wet or dry are a few factors, along with ground speed, blade sharpness, deck condition, and running the engine at WOT, also are to be considered.

John, Keep 'em both for the time being. A little elbow grease will clean up the 2182. Sam has done wonders on many "Cyclops" tractors bringing them back great shape.
I hate the plastic but the 2182 is one of the best tractors that wore the Cub Cadet name.

Seems like a good trade off. I can put five Cubs where one car sat and there are no titles or license to fool with!

Ok guys, thanks for the input! I think I'll go with my original plan to keep the 2182 and put a metal hood and grille on it. I need to have a solid mowing machine, so while I like the 1872 a little better, I'd better stick with the more practical solution.

If your main goal is a fast clean cut, and you're cutting other people's yards, I would flip one of the tractors and get a used Ferris or Scag or Exmark walk behind with a sulky and use that. They are made to cut grass, whereas a garden tractor is a multi-purpose machine. Blasphemy, I know.

Yes, I know you're correct. I just sold my Grasshopper, which has one of the best decks ever and an awesome cut. I want to use a Super Cub so I can do other things besides mowing. I just want the better cut between those two choices. Thanks!

I have a 1872 and like you I like the looks of it better then the 1863 cyclops I have. With that being said in my h.o. between the two the cyclops has a much better feel because of the tilt steering and the adjustable and thicker nicer seat. I also like the motor in the cyclops better it seams to be smoother and in the long term more easily replaced or rebuilt because of the parts availability in comparison to the magnum. As far as mowing I cant help you there mine do very little of that in fact I've never used the deck on the 1872.

I use a Super to cut 6 acres. I have, or had and used a 972,1572,1772,1872,2072,2182 and 1882 with a 50C, haban 60" and 44C decks.
Bottom line they all will do the job no problem. I keep one with a 44C for tight spots. I love the 50C. Easy on easy off,( one person) easy to work on and easy to get parts. I hate the Haban just the opposite hard off, hard to put on and hard to move around and hard to get parts. Also much more strain on the engine when using.
I am also not a fan of the plastic can not be fixed or replaced like the metal can. Usually no front remotes on cyclopes. I am not sure I see a huge advantage in one model over another. I would go with condition and hours on the tractor and keep the best one.

With risk of turning this thread into a deck comparison thread that gets moved to the attachment forum, Here is my take on the Haban decks. I've got a real early one under my 982 with no front gauge wheels. My 2072 has front gauge wheels. Other than the location of the serial tag, I don't think there is a difference otherwise. Both mow great, however, I had to spend quite a bit of time leveling the decks. Actually had to shim the spindles to get them as level as I wanted. They mow beautiful yards. The only drawback I see is traction on the machine with the front gauge wheels. On that machine, I let the deck ride on all 4 wheels--I think that is the way most guys have them set up--too much weight to ride on the chassis and mule drive--causes some wear issues which have been addressed in other threads. Without the weight of the deck on the tractor, having to steer the front gauge wheels, and that machine has an alum rear, I can get "stuck" real easy, or spin the tires and tear up the yard. I would try the Haban under the bigger machine before I bothered switching decks.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
