Default 73 oil change
Hi everyone I replaced the k161 7hp with a K301a 12 hp engine in my Cub Cadet 73.
I was wondering if I can change the engines oil without removing the deck.

Yes you can. Use a funnel with a flexible spout to help channel the oil into your container. You might also find it convenient to loosen the oil drain plug just enough to let oil run out without totally removing it. Let it drain for a while into your funnel until most of your oil has drained out. Yeah, this takes longer but it saves you from dropping the oil drain plug in the funnel, especially if you are leaving the deck on and trying to work around the undercarriage. Side note: Do you still have your 7 hp k161? Why did you change your engines?

Thanks for the tip on oil drain plug & thought I could use my transmission funnel. I should take the deck off to sharpen the blades but that's another day.
I no longer have the k161 it through a rod through its block but the little 7hp lasted 48 years! The little ole lady I bought this 73 from bought it brand new, the day I picked it up she said "They don't make em like that no more"

To follow up with this oil change I decided to remove the deck and glad I did. While the oil was draining I serviced the deck. There was so much caked on old grass underneath it was almost up to the blades. After taking a putty knife to clean it all up after an hour I removed 10 lbs of caked on grass. I sharpened the blades on both sides with my grinder then greased the deck pulleys.
So glad I did this if you haven't checked the underside of your deck lately now is the perfect time.

did you balance the blades after sharpening? unbalanced blades put terrible stress on your bearings and wear them out way before their time

As far as catching drain oil in containers, bah humbug,
just let it run on the deck real good, it keeps it from rusting!!
