Default 782 Starting Issue Solved

Removed the 782 starter last weekend after diagnosing inconsistent starter performance. Removed starter, disassembled, cleaned and reassembled. Ran out of time last weekend to reinstall, but got it in yesterday.

What a difference!

Now, the starter kicks over each time (like it's supposed to). Finished up with new points/condenser, plugs, fuel filter, fuel tank shutoff, oil and air filter. Installed the deck and took it for a practice mow.

Works great!

What all did you do to the starter? My 782 is just spinning without engaging. Engages about every 20th time. Seems like I cleaned it about 3 years ago to " fix" it. Been starting to act up since last fall. Only start it every so often as my blade is on my other garden tractor and the 782 sets most of the winter.

Take the starter off and apart, clean it inside and use fine emery to clean the end commutator, check the brushes for length, replace if necessary, lube the bushings with light weight oil.
A few drops is sufficient, more is not better, reassemble and clean the helical spline and relube with 52-357-01 it costs about $4 and is what works best @ all temps.
Reinstall/enjoy.
All this is covered in the overhaul manual

Never knew such a thing as Bendix drive lube existed. Is it similar to never-seize? That I have on the shelf. Knowing my luck if I tried to buy some I'd have to order a case or pay $15 freight.

Last tube I got on evil pray was $5 delivered.
Anti-Sneeze dries up and causes the gear to be sticky on the shaft after a while.
Considering the starters are not a simple R&R, might as well use what ya posta, and not look back

I'll look into getting a tube to have on hand. I would say we never have starter trouble, but that would be jinxing things, or lying, or both!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
