Uneven cut
Why does my 48" deck not want to cut even? It's like the left side blade rolls over some of the grass and not cut.
I've checked air pressure in the tires. Leveled the deck. Put new blades on it. (yes they are on right) Put new belts on the deck and the mule. It still looks like crap. It's like it mows better in reverse. Does anybody have a clue? I thought it was the fact that the blades were pretty wore out not dull. I think maybe it looks better using the old blades. The deck is on my 149 and is a fab 48" cut. Any thoughts . . . . |

Are the baffles intact?

Yes . . . I even made new ones on the ones that were bad. Some were already replaced so I matched that height. The only question there would be: How tall are the baffles? Those ones that were already replaced might not have been the right height. Where in retrospect do they stand compared to the blades? Do they come to the bottom of the blades or top?
Thanks!!! |

Could somebody out there measure the height of the baffles in there deck for me? I don't have any original baffles. They have been replaced. I can't find any info on them. Also, when you look at the bottom of the blades, Take a measurement from the bottom of the baffle to the bottom of the blade.
Anybody have any info on the smaller pulleys to make the blades go faster? |

on my 44a deck the baffles extend about 1/4 inch below the lowest part of the blade, overall they are about 3 inches tall...this is from memory, the deck is 1500 miles sout of me at the moment.
I beleive you want to create a vacuum chamber around each blade so the uplifted part of the blade pulls the grass into the cutting edge. however if you make the baffles too deep they may block the grass from getting TO the blade . I woul think Ideally they would go fully around each blade at the exact depth of the cutting edge, but as you know the blades tend to overlap too close to have a baffle all the way around. Have you checked belt tension and your idler assembly?? maybe the belt is slipping on the pulley for the one that isn't cutting well? Check that the V belt fits the pulley well...It should make good contact on the sides and not bottom out .

Are you mowing at 3600 RPM? Is the PTO clutch slipping?

Check the front tow-in. I had a newer CC that would roll the grass enough the blade couldn't or wouldn't pick it up behind the tire. Once I got the tow adjusted, the problem disappeared. I adjusted mine for near neutral tow.

Thanks for all your replies.
I think I do have a baffle problem. The blades sit below the baffles. I did adjust the RPM range too and it did help. As far as the belts go I've replaced them all. No slipping belts and I've just rebuilt the PTO and i know that's all good! I guess now I have till spring to fix it! From the weather report it's almost time to hook up the snow thrower! |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
