Default Looking at 1811

Hello all, I think I just posted this same question in the wrong spot, sorry. I'm looking at picking up an 1811. Does anyone know if the m18 Kohler is easier starting in the winter than the k301 in my cub 1250? My 1250 fires right up in the summer, but cold weather totally shuts it down. I've tried a lot of the tricks with marginal results. I have a line on a sweet deal on an 1811!

The 1811 is a nice machine. I've had better luck with the singles starting in cold weather, than the twins. The 100 I had would always start better in the cold, than the 782 and 1872, I used to own.

I plowed with an 1811 last winter and it always fired right up without issue.

My father has an 1872 and and 1862 with the 18HP kohlers in them. He initially was having problems with the 1862 starting in the winter. It would crank really slow, cough then the starter bendix would disengage from the ring gear. When I went to check it out, the battery cables on the battery were all corroded up and paper-thin by where the crimps were. New connections on the ends of the cables helped but did not solve the problem. The battery was something like 6+ years old, all worn out and did not have the cranking capacity to really crank it over properly at a good speed. A new battery fixed things right up and it would start pretty dependably.

My local Cub Service Manager said many years ago (when I bought my first Vanguard) that the Vanguards and the Commands would start a lot easier in cold weather than the Magnums/KT's. I don't believe his comment had anything to do with cranking speed because he said he always had to use starter fluid on the balky Magnums/KT's.

Based on my own experience since then, I'd agree with what he said. Other experiences may differ.

I clean horse stalls year round with a Bobcat Farmboy that has a Magnum 18 in it and it can be a bit hard to start in the winter but I can always get it running.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I appreciate it! The current seller stated that the engine smokes. I did a piston/ring job on my k301 last year, pretty simple. Is the m18 engine overhaul similar to the k series? I understand it's 2 cylinders...

Also, I've torn down two 1250s in the last 2 years. I feel like I kind of know what problems to look for with the quitelines. Can anyone recommend anything particular i should look for on an 1811? Thanks again for the advice!

Default ... Another question

What's considered high hours? This machine has over 1400 hours on it. Thank you!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
