GT2544 to 2284 engine swap
And so the saga begins...
For those not in the know, the PTO on my 2284 failed recently and I ordered a new one. Less than 30 minutes after installing the new PTO, the engine in my 2284 blew up (bad timing?). So since I had a line on a GT2544 for $200 with a good low hour engine (meter showed less than 330 hours), I nabbed that to do a motor swap. Pics and info will follow. Below are a few pics of the donor tractor. Original owner got rid of it because the deck is basically trash (rough around the edges, bent shafts, etc). The tractor itself isn't in bad shape. It actually has the headlights in which seems to be rare for this generation. Little to no rust, engine pops off first crank but the trans or trans linkage is bad. Reverse is fine but forward is a crawl. Either way, this machine isn't going to get another life so apart it comes. Below are a few pics of the donor machine and the 2284 that will receive the new heart. Stay tuned for more pics and progress info! And as always, click on the small pic for a larger image

I wonder if the new engine has a 1" shaft or if it's 1-1/8" it would suck if you can't use the new PTO. It may also have large dip stick tube that interferes with the muffler, you can fix that problem with a BFH, BTDT.

Dipstick appears to be in the same spot, I'll let you know on the pto. Either way it has a pto so worst case I can use that one....I hope!

Today is work day so expect an update this evening! I've got fellow member from here Cadetbob coming over in a couple hours here and we're going to tare into things. First order of business is to confirm the status of the 2284 engine (dead or seized PTO). Then after that, one way or another, I'm finally going to finish getting my lawn cut even if I have to go out there with a pair of hand shears and do it one blade of grass at a time!

I think this thread needs a poll who thinks Ryan has a PTO or an engine problem.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
