Carter Carbs.
Hey All. Decided to rebuild the Carbs on the 124 and 125 both with k301AS engines and Carter carbs. When I did the first one I opened the rebuild kit and there was no seat in the needle seat assembly. There was needle and brass screw in part of the seat, but no seat. The one took apart certainly had a rubber seat just where you would think it should be. Called company that sold the parts and they said "It seems like there should be one but their rebuild kit did not contain one"? Well hmm, Went ahead and did the rebuild with all else and got it running pretty well. Left the old seat.
Did the second one today, when I took it apart there was no seat for the needle in the bottom of the brass part the needle sits in. My assumption was there should be seat because I have never been in a carb without one. First Carter Carb I have been in however. The kits also had no gaskets for the intake or the air cleaner mount. Who makes kits that have all the parts? Or does stuff have to be ordered in pieces instead of a kit. Thanks Ken |

I know what's in the kit. Am trying to figure out if indeed there is a
seat that belongs there. Maybe I wasn't real clear in my original question. In the assemblies on the parts blowups it lists a #18 needle seat with the same kit # we are looking at. I guess I have always gotten the parts I needed for a carb when I ordered a carb repair kit. Ken |

Don’t think Ive ever seen a Carter carb for a Kohler engine with a rubber seat. None of the six or seven I have around here have them. Carbs on Tecumseh have rubber seats in them.

Thanks Doug, that's what I have been trying to figure out. Wouldn't have
been so puzzling if the first one I opened up hadn't had a rubber seat in it. PO attempt at something I reckon. Thanks again Ken |

Yep I bought the genuine Kohler Parts. When talking to the company on the
phone they didn't even know what the inside of the carb looked like to help me out. Just trying to put em back together the way the manufacturer intended. A bit of challenge it seems. Thanks for the help. Ken |

Usually a Carter carb had a viton tipped needle(it feels like a rubber tip) and a brass receiver that the needle lives in, and is threaded into the carb body. Some early carbs used only a metal needle with a brass seat. Other manufactures as mentioned, used a metal or aluminum needle but the brass receiver/seat where the needle lives used a neoprene or viton sealing seat that looked like a disc or "O" ring that the needle seated in, still others had the needle seat pushed into the carb base and some were not replaceable.
Back in the day pre 60's, it was common in most carbs for a needle to be steel and the seat/receiver it lives in, was brass and screwed into the body. With the advent of the viton tip needle, better sealing was accomplished and less fuel leaking into the carb/engine both during operation and storage. Hope this helps. |

It think his concern was that someone previously put some kind of rubber seat in his carb that didn’t belong there. He thought the kit should have had the rubber piece to replace but since it is t supposed to be there, the kit did not provide one.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
