Mag 18 starter problem
The wife's 1812 starter just spins and wont engage. It was fine till it got cold out. I'm thinking it was lubed or oil or something leaked onto it and is gummed up or just stiff because of the cold temp. Will cleaning and lube help this? Or, should I change out the drive gear? Which brings me to next part of question. Partstree calls for part number 82-755-32. The cheapest one on epay is 59 bucks, half of cub cadet's price. If you search for "kohler starter drive" there's all kinds of kits for $20 bucks and all the pics look the same. Is there really that many different ones?
Has anyone else had this problem and what was your remedy?

My suggestion to you is, order the part(s) you want and be "part number specific". Do NOT order by images, or this is what it looks like. A lot of sellers use images as "general reference" and it really means nothing.
In my world, I would pull the starter out of the tractor. Take to the bench. Dismantle the "bendix drive". Clean it all up, lubricate it, then re-install. Now, if you want to spend as little time as possible and assure yourself a positive outcome, order & install a whole new starter.

Roland is on the mark here...I have fixed many "bad" starters just by taking them off and cleaning the internals...You would be surprised how much debris gets inside of them...Plus it just costs you time the first go around...

Another possibility.
Put a charger on your battery for a little bit. That will put more kick in your starter to spin the drive out against the flywheel. I've had Magnum starters act like that. I think I've just sprayed brake cleaner in around the starter drive and that fixed it. For now. I remember also taking one apart as suggested above and cleaning it up. That fixed it. I've never seen the need to buy a new starter. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
