Default Drive Pulley/Grass screen 7HP Kohler

I have to remove the drive pulley and grass screen from an old 7HP Kohler (and then the tins will be free).

I have the crank nut out.

I can get the drive pulley to rock on the shaft a small amount but I cannot get it to slide off the shaft.

I can't get the tins off to get something behind the drive pulley to pry it out (gently) as the grass screen is larger in diameter than the opening in the tin.


I have read this thread several times, but while this unit came loose easily once the crank nut was off, mine sure isn't .

I found the drive pulley on ebay so I can now visualize what's going on with it being indexed to the crank

The pin (in Picture) is about 1/4 inch steel.
It fits into a hole in the steel flywheel.
If everything were perfect and new it would slide right out.
But if yours is anything like the picture the only thing that will help is
patience, perseverance, lots of PB Blaster, and maybe some heat.

Thanks... Maybe I can get the flex nozzle of the can of Blaster thru the screen to the general area of that pin. It's possible I can locate the bulge in the hub with a flashlight through the screen so that I know where to shoot the loose juice.

It's always something (the front pulley on both of these engines aren't going anywhere either but that's another story)

I'm talking about the starter belt pulley.

The basket pulley and the starter pulley are one welded assembly, and not separable.

And the driveshaft hub on the rear is pinned to the flywheel and must, and tread lightly here, pull STRAIGHT OFF without turning or you will bend or break the pin or break out the hub where the pin is inserted.

This is the drive hub/pulley where the grass screen is at the operator end of the engine. I got it off though I did fracture a bit of the hole where the pin goes. I think it will be OK as the only place where the pin loads that hub is below where the fracture is. I don't think that pin puts any load at the thin part of that hub pocket.

The only other choice I had (and I should have done this) is to take a pair of dykes and cut the rim of the grass screen out so that I could remove the tin from the engine and then more precisely lever that hub out. I'll keep an eye out for one of the hubs (the one I linked to is sold) in case my thoughts about the drive pin to hub interface is wrong and put it in the Cub bins just in case.



The pin came out of the flywheel without any drama and I moved it to the new engine (which had it removed).



Interesting to think about all the load on that little Zamac pulley!

The pulley is there to belt power the optional hydraulic lift pump and valve ass'y that was offered back when these machines were in their heyday.
