Cub Cadet 87
The Transmission needs some TLC. Can anyone suggest where I can have a Heli-coil fitted, in the Columbus Ohio area.

Wow, you are doing a nice job! Those often don't get any respect unfortunately. Try an auto machine shop for getting a heli-coil installed, or if there is an old school job-shop type machine shop in your area, they can handle it. Even a lot of mechanics can. Just get a cost first!

Progress
Managed to have a Heli-coil fitted at the local AG-PRO. Great service, friendly and reasonably priced.
Everything fits and works as it should. Next step is to buy grease or oil or both. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

I'm not familiar with your particular transmission bit from the looks of your picture it was grease filled, not oil. Hard to see everything, but I don't make out any filler plug so that would pretty much mean you have to pack it with grease and close it up. Most of the Peerless or Spicer transmissions I've worked on call for bentonite grease which is clay based grease and is expensive. But most any good quality grease will work, this is not a Maseratti. Some folks recommend using corn head grease which is very sticky, slick, and somewhat pourable. Since the grease tends to pack itself in nooks and crannies, you may want to consider putting grease fittings in the case so you could add grease occasionally to keep everything coated. Or another option is, you could put in drain & fill plugs and use 90# gear oil.
By the way, nice job so far, keep pics coming. |

Any other updates? I haven't seen many threads of anybody restoring these. I'm embarking on a similar journey with my 75, and I just bought an 85 and another 75 that are on their way here.
I find it inspiring to see others fixing these up. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
