2186 starting issue
Hello all.
I have a GT2186 that is going on 19 years. For the last couple it’s had an odd starting issue. I was told by the local dealer it would cost about $200 to fix. They said it’s a known problem but yet I can’t find any info on it. Not sure I want to put $200 into fixing because of its age. The issue. It has a good battery, bought last spring and it’s been checked. When I go to start it, I turn the key and all that happens is light on the dash comes on. Everything works though. Safety switches, when started engine runs fine. But to start it, I put jumper cables on it and hook it up to my Jeep. Let the Jeep run for for about 5 minutes and it starts right up. And before you say it’s the battery...I can put a brand new one in and same issue. The dealer said the issue is a low voltage problem that is common on this tractor. Anyone heard of this? |

You need to add a relay to the start circuit. His pictures disappeared due to postimage, but it is a decent explanation.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
