Broke a leg...
Hey guys haven't posted in a while and figured this was worthy of sharing. Been using the 1772 a lot lately. Just built a new garage and have had a lot of dirt to move around among other loader tasks. I was backing up a dirt pile when I got stuck. I went and extended the hoe to help pull myself out. Then I heard a snap! And saw my fender sitting on the tire. Broke the axle clean off. I was actually relieved that it was just the axle to be honest. But then I was trying to figure out how to get the tractor out of the dirt. Wound up using the backhoe as a crutch and limped out till I could pick it up with the case 580ck.

Ouch! What does that hoe weigh? Do you have ballast in the rear tires? The manual for my Kubota says not to run fluid in the tires with the backhoe on. It has do do with the fluid in the tires taking away most of the cushion from air in the tires.

That is the problem with abusing a garden tractor, and that is exactly why
the design was never intended to put a loader and a back hoe on them. They make a scut which is more robust or as you know/have a TLB. Sorry for your breakdown, glad nobody was hurt. I bet it failed at the weak point where the brake drum is welded to the axle shaft. |

I am running fluid in the tires, probably about 80% full. The backhoe only goes on when I need it otherwise its off and a 3 point /200lb count weight takes its place. It broke just about 1/2 inch from the weld. Looks to have twisted right off. Got a replacement on the way. I was looking at upgrading to the 30mm shafts. Anyone ever do that? I understand the axle tubes need to be machined to fit the larger bearings. Anything else?

Hope it's just the axle. Last time I busted an axle on one of my trucks it took out the spindle along the way.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
