Can't get it off...pto clutch
Hi All,
I'm trying to remove the pto clutch from my 1440 because I need to replace the rear (front of mower) crankshaft oil seal. Turning the bolt just turns the engine over. I've sprayed some WD on it and will let it sit to see if it loosens up anything. I'm a mediocre mechanic at best but try to fix what I can. Any ideas? This site has helped me many times before, it's GREAT! |

I know not much good advice if you don't have one I have a 24v impact that'll take them off too, sometimes my brother has a corded impact from HFT that will do it too, sometimes

If you dont own an impact gun. You need to "shock" it loose. That's what an impact gun does. Use a socket that is as shallow as possible. Hold your ratchet near the head with one hand and bump the end of the ratchet with the other using the inside of you palm or even a dead blow mallet.

I was thinking impact was the key, I may have a buddy that has one. I may try the end bump technique until I can get ahold of my friend. Thanks Y'all!

Seriously.... impact works best, but you can't take the bolt out with a wrench without holding the engine from turning. |

I place a pipe wrench on the driveshaft which will keep the engine from turning.
Larger vise grips will work also if no pipe wrench can be found. As has been suggested, an impact zips it right off. I've done my 1440 and 1864 this way with success.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
