Default Found a 1811 for sale - really want to buy it

I found a 1811 Cub for sale. The cub lover in me really really wants to buy it, but the practical guy in me says its over priced and too far away.

Its 1300 dollars and about 3 hours away. I have not seen it in person yet, but for a 1811 with just a mower deck, no chains, weights, or other implements, and over a 1,000 hours, I think 1300 dollars is about 400-500 dollars too much. From the photos the body looks to be in good shape and the decals on the hood are still complete.

Its a good thing it is 3 hours away, cause if it was closer I would probably give in and go buy it Thursday. As it is I am going to wait till after Christmas and go down and see it when I got some more time off - if its still for sale. Maybe I will get lucky and some soul will purchase it taking the temptation away from me.

I dont need another Cub, but when did practicality have anything to do with a hobby.

HI Krisb

I understand your trepidation about the price - reversing this though if I were sellling my 1811 I would want similar $ but with 300 less hrs and everything in good mechnical and visual order.

If the unit needs work then you can spend $3-500 really fast - I know as I did this in the last year with all sort of small repairs, updates and paint, but I decided to keep it for a long time with a few $ each year is less $ than a new unit today.

Bottom line - its worth what someone will pay, but $12-1300 is probably the top of the range IMO.

Be patient and obsessive!:biggrin2.gif: I stopped to see an 1811 the week before Thanksgiving. The guy wanted $800 for it. I don't remember the hours, but it ran fine, had a mowing deck and was in the condition you'd expect for it's age. (Aged not abused) I thought that was a little on the high side, but I usually don't buy unless it's a price that's too good to pass up. A few weeks later (looking at CL and Ebay) I found a 982 for $200 more on ebay and a few miles from my house. Similar condition, but with a 50" deck, wheel weights and complete.

1300 for an 1811 even in super condition is way overpriced. you can get nice supers for that.

An 1811 is a nice tractor but should be $750 to $850 if clean in this area. Last fall I purchased a 982 Super with 3pt, PTO, f/r hydraulics & blower for $800 and a 1772 Super diesel with 60 mower & 54 blade for $1500. Hang in there and watch ebay or Craig's list as there are lots of good CC in this area!

It all boils down to how bad do you really want it and how long do you want to wait. I live in California. Out here, earlier models (in my case a super 1872) are few to none. I found a nice one in Ohio for a great price. If I didn't have a relative who was able to get me a 75% break on the shipping, I never would have bought it. Still, it ended up costing what guys in the mid-west would consider top dollar. But I REALLY wanted it. Then again, it was dirt cheap to any comparable new model...............and built like a tank!

Thanks for the advice guys. I decided to buy a new camera instead. I have my first nephew on the way and figured a camera made more sense at the moment.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
