Rear end conversion.
I'd like to convert my 882 to a cast iron housing.
How hard would it be, and what is involved in converting from an aluminum rear axle to a Cast iron axle? Are the internal parts the same where all I would need to do is get a cast iron housing and swap over the parts?

I need to do mine too. I don't think you will have to change anything because it is not a SGT. The SGT's have a different gear reduction because of the larger tires. The AL rears have better internal parts but unless your abusing it you should be able to keep the complete CI assembly without changing the guts.

MattG has a good walk through on his website. I followed it and it took me around 4-6 hours. For more experienced people, it shouldn't take that long. It worked out well for me - only thing I didn't do right was get the gasket to seal where the pump and housing meet up. I think I'm gonna tackle that this weekend.
The internals are different - the aluminums have bevel cut gears and the CI rears have straight cut gears. The carriers will swap out as long as you get your backlash set. It was really a fun project and the best thing that I've done to the 982. Good luck! Nate

On a diesel, you have a bit more to do. The clearance between the bolts that hold the rectangular cover on the top of the trans may interfere with the fuel tank, so the holes in the cover may need to be countersunk, and you'll want to use allen-head countersunk bolts there instead of normal hex-head bolts. If you want a dipstick, you'll have to do some machining to get that in there.
If you're going to go through the trouble of doing this, I'd put the aluminum rear's carrier in there. You can swap ring gears so you don't have to disturb the pinion shaft, which is the worst part of the job when doing this to a super. Just set the preload with the ring gear off, then install it and move the shims around so you get the proper contact pattern and backlash. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
