Cleaning up the mower.
It was a beautiful day but to wet to get in my yard. So I thought I'd start cleaning our 2166 Cub. It was bought it new in 2001, it stays inside all the time. The paint was bubbling up in many areas. I just finished the grill and side panels. It is a great little mower but the paint from the factory is the pits! Looks like I started a new project. This got me thinking of two things...
1.) Did Cub Cadet stop using oil base paint for water base paint? Is that what's on these tractors now? This would not be a power coat, would it? 2.) I have always washed my tractor about every 3rd time it was used. It got the garden hose to it then air dried. Would this have anything to do with the "newer style paint" pealing off ? Click picture to enlarge. This is after scraping and some cleaning.

I wash and wax my stuff probably once a year, and only when the sun can thoroughly dry everything. Considering that all of the rust on your 2166 appears to have started from joints between parts and holes and edges of the sheetmetal parts, I'd say that washing every third mowing is a bit excessive. I would use an air compressor to blow the grass and dust out of everything after every mowing, and maybe wash it once a year (in the hot sun) and wax it.

Scotty, I'm already in the process of sanding and painting. This was to show what has happened to me. I will be cleaning my tractor differently in the future.

Almost every manufacturer has at some point either experimented with some sort of "new" paint process or they went to some "new" metal prep process or they just flat out went cheap. What you have there IS NOT in my opinion a natural wear and age condition. Concider all the auto manufacurers that at one point or another had paint problems, the color of silver through the 80s an example as almost every one had fade, lift, and rust problems. MTD from what I heard got a real bad rap over the period of a decade or so for producing junk. Your mower may mow well but I think this is an example of the bad rap. In fact the dealer signs that came out in the early 90s that said "Cub Cadet by MTD" caused sales to plummit so MTD sent out a dealer patch that covered the MTD portion of the sign. Scott |

I'll wash mine on occasion if it needs it and then dry it off with a good cloth. I'll wax it a couple times a season. I always blow the dirt/leaves/dust off including under the hood after every mowing. Looks to me that's a result of several years of washing and letting air dry.

I should say that when it did get washed we always dried it off and let it air dry before it ever got put away. We always blow the engine clean. I never really like getting it wet. It also got waxed about once or twice a year.
These pic's were taken after I had already started to sand and scrap the bad spots. I picked up the metal sealer / primer and paint today from TSC. I'm thinking I'll take the seat pan off and see what I get from there before I start painting. Mich60

I let mother nature take cafe of washing and drying my tractors.
I just don't seen to have time to wash, dry, wax, polish my tractors. I do however perform maintance on the motors and decks every season to keep them in good operating condition. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
