Cub 100 Won't Start
I have been trying to get my great grandpa's Cub Cadet 100 running. It has been sitting in a shed for at least 10 years. I started by dropping a battery in and made sure it would turn over, which it did. I then cleaned the gas tank, sediment bowl and carb. I then attempted to start it, but it would not fire. No spark. I found out the ignition switch was the problem, so I just twisted the two wires from the ignition switch together. I then had spark, but the engine still would not fire. I tried dumping gas in the cylinder and also starter fluid. When I untwisted the two ignition switch wires, it fired and blew out the carb and air intake.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? |

have you checked to see if the valves are stuck open?

Change the oil get a new plug and rebuild the carb and clean the points with some very fine sandpaper. Cleaning the bowl only gets the junk out of bowl. You need to replace the needle and seat and pull all the screws to make sure all the ports in the carb are clean. Also never use ether to try and start your engine. There are no lubricating properties in it. It will damage your engine.

If the rod that is inside where the carb attaches is the intake valve then that is not stuck, I just looked at that tonight. Where can I find the exhaust valve? I have taken a point file to the points, but is there supposed to be spark at the points?

Drain and change the oil. Change the spark plug, points, condenser, plug wire. Remove the carb and disassemble and clean it. Drain and flush the fuel tank and replace the fuel line. Make sure that the coil doesn't have corrosion where the plug wire goes in. Time it by the static timing method. THEN, let us know if it won't start.
You can remove the side cover and see the valves move, if you want to. |

I will give an update in a few days. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
