Smile 3184 PTO help

If is not one thing with this 3184 its another. After getting the non starting problem figured out now the PTO has decided to give me fits. As I never have worked on this type of PTO I am in need of some help. Sometimes it will engage and run for about 30 min's then just shut off. Other times it will not engage. I do understand that its either vacuum over electric or vise versa. Other than that I am a complete loss on how to check/ and or what to check. Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

It's electric over vacuum. Did you check safety switches? Vacuum hoses? The mechanical linkage on the front for binding? Anything?

I think Oak has one of those, you may want to PM him.

J-Mech, Thank you for confirming the PTO operation. I am assuming that all the safties are working, as the tractor fires right up. Pulled the vacuum hose to the diaphragm, and theres vacuum there. I can push down on the diaphragm and the linkage moves freely. So I assuming that it must be on the electrical side.

Don

If you have a vacuum tester I'd check the actuator #23 and the solenoid #16 in this pic. I have never worked on one of these but it doesn't look too complicated. I'd also check all the hose's from the engine to the solenoid and to the actuator for leaks. Good luck and keep us posted.

Yes, I have a vacuum tester and will do as you suggested. Oak answer my PM and is sending a schematic. He thinks it is in one of the safety switches. If I ever get this problem fiqured out I will let you know.

I have a fair amount of experience with 3k series tractors. If the PTO will engage and run for any amount of time then stop(but the engine keeps running, and everything else works), then the problem will almost ALWAYS be one of the many safety switches built into the system. The likely culprit is most likely the seat switch. all you need to do is disconnect it- don't jumper it, and mow that way for awhile to see if it cures the problem. These are very sensitive switches, and with age, tend to get to the point where they will quit working properly for no good reason. If you look at the wiring diagram it becomes very apparent how many safety devices MTD was forced to put on these tractors.
P.S. While the PTO switch looks complicated, it is really a fairly simple device that is well built and rarely is the problem.

There are two vacuum lines on the solenoid, there is vacuum on the one coming from the engine. The other one runs up under the dash and is capped off with a white plug. I put my testor on the solenoid port with the line capped off and it will pull the actuator down therefore engaging the PTO. Put the testor on the solenoid port which is supplied with engine vacuum and nothing moves. there are two wires at the solenoid, red and a blue, with the tractor running and the PTO switch engaged no power to either wire.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
