Default Tiller Bracket Adjustment

When I got my 1450 and #2 tiller the pulleys were not in alignment when I put it on the tractor. I fixed it yesterday.

This is what I had before:

I took the top straps off and compared them. I used a hydraulic press to adjust the ends of the right bracket to make the angles the same as the left strap.

This is what I have now:

I got new belts for my tiller. Now I feel confident that the upper belt won't get destroyed because of pulley misalignment.

Is there any "wiggle room" in rotating the Tractor Gear Box to get a better alignment..??

I haven't checked. The pulleys had gross misalignment. It was clear that the tiller was rotated with respect to the tractor. When I took the straps off and compared them it was clear there was a problem.

I got this tractor and tiller two years ago so I don't know its history. Both ends of the right straps needed adjustment which leads me to think it wasn't because the tiller took a hit. I wonder if that strap was bent incorrectly from the factory.

It was very satisfying to see the angle after I bent the straps and put them back on. There is a slight misalignment that I will try to take out by loosening the gearbox and rotating it.

One of my tillers was the same way, the pulleys were simply NOT lined up.

After looking at it for a minute I decided to see what happened if I switched the upper arms, presto-chango, much to my surprise, the pulleys lined up very well. I've been using that tiller for several years now without any problems.

Not saying this is the cure for all similar such things, it just worked in this case...

I did the same thing at first and the pulleys lined up. Call it OCD but it wasn't right. I wanted the arm with the square hole for the carriage bolt that holds the guard on the right.

You may want to compare your arms to see if one is bent. I laid one on the other so they nested. It was very clear that they didn't match.

That's the difference I guess, none of my tillers have belt guards.

I have two of those tillers. Both hang a little crooked like the picture. I haven't had any problem with the belt coming off. I always figured the right side arm was bent a little for whatever reason.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
