Default Kohler K321 Smoking + Using Oil

I picked up a cub 1450 about a month ago. The tractor is in very good condition other than the engine smoking and a small tranny leak. I changed the engine oil the first day i brought it home, because it smoked pretty bad at start up and lightly while running full throttle. After the oil change it still smokes at start up for about 30 seconds but it did stop smoking sitting and running full throttle but it smokes when pulling the hill in my back yard (pretty steep). By the way the smoke it white/grey and it is using oil. I am using TSC 30wt oil. I am assuming the rings are worn out and I'm not sure if there is anything I can try. I'm not going to be using the tractor to mow once a week. It's just a toy that I plan on using to plow the garden in the spring and pulling it out of the shed once a week just to give it a run. I know the bottom iso mounts are wore out and I will be installing new ones soon. Is there anything I can try to help with the smoking and oil consumption (trying to avoid a rebuild at this time)? As long as I don't let it run low on oil is it going to hurt the engine? Could worn iso mounts have anything to do with the smoking/oil consumption because of the engine shaking? (pretty noticeable vibration at all rpm's) ? By the way the lady I bought the tractor from let it sit most of the time she only used it 2-3 times per summer. Any advice, tips,or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

not much you can do without opening it up. pull the air cleaner off and behind it you will see a little vented cover. take that cover off and have a look. it will be caked with oil. you are losing oil there and out the exhaust if the rings are worn.

folks here have said you can sometimes get away with a hone and new rings in stock size. If you are lucky maybe that would work for you. I would not bet on it though.

It won't hurt the engine as long as you keep oil in it. It will foul plugs regularly, but other than that you should be okay for a few years. Set the timing and carb correctly, clean the breather, and it should work as long as you don't try to pull a house down with it or something. Let us know what you do! Good luck!

Would it help him to run a heavier weight oil?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
