FEL hydraulics
I acquired a 1450 with a Johnson workhorse a couple months ago. I'm not sure what model it is. The PO has the hydraulics hooked to the ported pump. I would like to put a dedicated pump on the loader. I can not find what size pump originally came with it. I've checked other sites and pump sizes are all over the place. Does anyone know what size pump was original on these? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

There will be more expert input provided I am sure, but a FEL was not a Cub Cadet "recognized" accessory, so there was not an "approved" hydraulic pump. The FEL projects I have reviewed all have an auxiliary pump powered by the PTO. There certainly may be other options but the consensus is the stock hydraulic capacity is not sufficient for satisfactory operation of a FEL
I recall posts that specified particular pumps and posts that discouraged the application of a FEL to a vintage Cubbie. That being said I would like one for one of my tractors. Good luck on your project! |

Just curious, why do you want a dedicated pump? Nothing wrong with using the tractor's pump...

All I suggest is if you don't want to use the pump on the tractor, it's your choice. I'd look through Surplus Center and pick a pump that you think suits the need. The specs are mostly listed in cubic inches per revolution. The spec for the tractor's pump are in the service manual. IIRC, it converts to about 3.5 gpm and you can go as high as 5 for a loader. Just make sure that the valve on the loader will handle the GPM you go with. It takes some math to get pump speed correct, pressures, know where the system relief is... if it even has one on it now. If you don't know anything about hydraulics, your in over your head. (No idea what your particular skill set is.) |

Thanks for the reply's. I would rather have the dedicated pump just to take the added strain and heat away from the tractor itself. I was looking to see if anyone had the flow rate of the original Cessna pump Johnson used. I know Cub had nothing to do with the loaders. Thanks again.

According to the Johnson 10TC loader manual, the loader uses a Cessna model 5HBCCW5 pump.

I have a Johnson 10 on another machine that flows at about 4.7 gpm and it is too fast. You may want to get a pump in the 3-4 gpm. Even then, you will find it works best at half throttle. I sold the Johnson pump because I did not need it because I am using the tractor hydraulics. My Johnson pump was also a Studebaker power steering pump.

There is a NF hydraulic lift pump on EBAY right now for $110. I know nothing of hydraulics, but I thought I would throw that out there just in case you could use it. Cub Cadet 123

It was there last night.....someone must have bagged it! It was just the reservoir, not mounting brackets, rockshaft, cylinder, etc....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
