Default Spare Super rear rebuild

Picked up a rear from a Super from Leadslingingdaddy a couple weeks ago and finally got around to working on it. Pulled the gear case apart, cleaned it up. Drilled two oil return holes on each side (see red arrows) so that the oil and condensation that gets trapped in the axle tubes can return to the main case when you drain the oil. After I finish the gear case I’ll tear the pump apart, inspect and reseal it.

How did you know/figure out to drill the casing for the axle tubes to drain? Very good info!

Everyone that I've taken apart is always full of nasty stuff up to the level of the carrier bearings. I had one that sat for a long time and it had about 2 cups of water in each side. Easy job on the aluminum case. Not sure with a cast iron.

Got the gear case all done today. Even painted it just for Randy. Drilled and taped the case for a vent also. I'll get some pics of it tomorrow. Next is the pump. Plan on opening it up tomorrow.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
