Default Cub cadet 106

Hello everyone, I am looking into purchasing a cub cadet 106. It's in need of restore but seems to be complete. Anyway, I am wanting to know on this 106 is there certain things I should check before buying? It runs and does not smoke. Just wondering if there are flaws with this model of certain things I should look over? I have a 102 with internal brakes and I believe the 106 has external brakes. Is there anything I should be aware of as to the brakes? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Chad,
Nice find on the 106. It will pretty much be equivalent to your 102. It's a couple of series newer than your 102, but is still a narrow frame. The main difference is the grille, dash and fenders (the 106 has a one piece fender deck while your 102 has separate fenders and foot rests). Most of the changes between the two models is cosmetic.

BTW, my friend Buzz was telling me about a 104 in Desoto - he might go look at it - if he doesn't want it I'll let you know. I have three 104s already.

Default cub cadet 106

Here is a pic of the 106 i'm looking to buy. The guy says that it was last ran a year ago. I would think fresh gas, a carb clean and a hot battery and it should run. I got him talked down to $125. Should be worth that? cub cadet 106.jpg

Chad,
I remember seeing that on CL. Since it wasn't a wide frame, I didn't check into it. I think he was wanting $200 for it if I remember correctly. I believe the deck was shot? Good luck.

I would be inclined to pass on that unless you can see the engine run. I bought a 106 like that. The guy said the engine ran, it just needed the carb rebuilt, well that turned out to be a bunch of . The rod was shot and the oil had turned into black sludge in the oil pan. I ended up rebuilding a 12 hp for it. You can also figure the rest of it needs rebuilt as well. Steering, clutch, pto, brakes, etc. If it had goodies then it would be another story, but from the picture it looks like a weathered, plain jane 106 with no attachments. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't expect it to be a $125 tractor, expect it to be closer to $1000 when it's all said and done with. If you feel it's worth it then go for it, i'm just giving you the opinion of a college student with no money, who has btdt.

Terry,

Yes, this is the cub on CL and i was mainly looking into it for a good workhorse around my property. I am going to look at it tomorrow and was just wanting some insight as to things i should look out for. I think this model has external disk brakes and are they prone to have issues? Don't have to be pretty just tough and able to take a beating hauling wood from the back of my property.

The 106 will have no problems, hauling wood around your property.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
