Default New member doing research

Hi, my name is Mike and I am a new member located in Jonesboro, AR. I am interested in purchasing a cub cadet garden tractor. I am trying to do as much research as possible in advance so I buy the right one the first time. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I know there are many different models and picking one is difficult. I would like a restoration project. I want a gear drive as I assume these models will be easier to restore for a beginner than a hydro. I did not mention it, but this will be my first restoration project (of any kind). I like the looks of the older models (70 or 100 for example). I will likely only use the tractor to mow occasionally and to attach a blade to move snow and or a snow blower. Right now I am mostly interested in the actual restoration. However, once the restoration is completed I want to be able to use it. From what I read it sounds like I will need a creeper gear for a gear drive model with a blower. One area that I am confused about is the PTO. It is my understanding that some have a rear PTO and others do not. I assume having a rear PTO allows for greater versatility when it comes to the number and types of attachments that are possible. Do all cub cadet tractors have a PTO in the front? Sorry if this should be obvious but I am a beginner and that is why I am trying to do some research first. Anyway I have a lot of questions. I am enjoying reading the different threads. It may not seem like it, but I have learned a lot in the last couple of weeks while browsing the site. Thanks.

Mike,

I have a 100 I'm fixing up. Mine originally had the optional rear PTO but my dad replaced the transaxle years ago and it no longer has the PTO. The front PTO will allow you to run a mower deck, snow thrower, and tiller. I believe they all came with the front PTO.

Glad to have ya. There is a lot of information here. There are many attachments for the 70/100 series and some goodies. Goodies would include head lights, a hydraulic lift, a spring assist, that helps reduce the effort of manually lifting an attachment be it on the front or rear and a three point hitch. And with this series... rear fenders. If you find a Cub with any of these the price is usually a bit more. Putting them on will cost some $$$. Have fun and keep us updated.

First of all, Welcome to our Forum......

In regards to the rear PTO, it is not a very common feature. It has a tremendous amount of "cool factor" but has almost zero factor for functionality.
It rotates backwards. In order to run PTO driven implements, you would need a "Reverser Attachment"

Each model of Cub offers there Pros and Cons. You will have to decide what strikes your fancy. BUT....no matter what model you choose, it will be a "labor of love" in restoring it and there is a bunch of guys here to help you along the way.

Merk, I was actually looking at your post yesterday. I really enjoyed all of the detail and pictures. I have it saved on my favorites for future reference.

Default Welcome and Beware

Mike when you buy your first and find you like this hobby,Beware because it wont be too long before you love it! What I like the most is that you can work on it one piece at a time.I got my 1812 for FREE,3 yrs. ago,But,to date I have about $900.00 into it.I have a 4' snowblade and this machine works just as hard as any pick-up truck.(my driveway is 300x25).I also have an 1100
