Default BELT length?

OK. Ive got a 149 serial 20500447 U487758 I'm trying to get a belt to go to a QA42 inch deck, serial number 421 U 1113. I tried a 1/2 77 from CC but it appears its way too short. The belt fits nicely in both the PTO and the deck pulley as far as width. Suggestions for length 1/2 x 85? thanks for your help.

That 77" belt is likely an IH-477599-R2 belt and is indeed for the 42" deck spindles!! not the PTO to deck!!

If you don't need the spindle belt (you will sooner or later) return it to the dealer and request a PTO Belt...The Cub Cadet Belt/Blade Reference Guide says that a 149 using a older model 42" deck should use an 80" IH-490489-R2 belt.

Note, however, the 149 did not come with a 42" deck. You normally should have a 38" 44" or 50 ". Please check the cutting width of your deck. Provide us with the serial number of your 149 and the info on the deck data tag (found on the top left rear of the deck). Then, perhaps, we can narrow down the exact belts you need.

You are correct ( a case of CRS! (:-}>...) The deck data plate information you posted clearly shows you have a 42 " deck (the first two digits) . Use the number I provided for the 80" belt.

Please look at your tractor serial number again: a 2050044U is a 109. A 2050047U is a 149. I'm assuming you hit the 4 twice instead of once.

That number calls for a 3/8 x 80 pto belt. will that be an issue as far as width? The 1/2 in fit the pto pulley well. Is going down 1/8 in width going to cause issues? I can also go with a A80(1/2x80) belt and it should do the same?. Thanks for th info. It most definately is a 149

If you are going the aftermarket route on the belt, here is a belt that will work. You will need in a Section A belt series.......A78

RFrank:

Please be advised that while automotove belts will work for a while (you will get tired of buying them), they are not designed for and do not stand up well for use as a PTO belt. Lawn & Garden belts are best for your purposes.

The belt numbers from the Cub Cadet Manual are what IH/CCC says are supposed to be used in given applications. It is your tractor and you can put any belt on there you want, but using the proper belt (width and length) provides the best results.

I agree 100%. Im using the correct cub cadet belt or IH belt for the deck and pulley. BTDT. In a pinch an auto belt might get you thru the mowing of that day but not likely the season.
Thanks for all the good info.

Tried the IH-490489-R2 belt and its too short, forced it on and it pulled the idler so far back it was rubbing on the front axle. So after looking a little harder on the internet it looks as though it might take an 85in belt as the serial number is so low for that deck. Well keep trying and let you know. Im gonna order the IH belt tomorrow.

How about posting a picture(s) of your tractor and deck. This would give us a better understanding of the situation.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
