Low Compression
Was doing some work on starter,Then decided to do a compression test 140 on one side 110 on the other. Pulled head and found this. I don't know what happened I bought the motor used last winter.Some one was in here tinkering with it. I can stick a .30 feeler gauge in it.

looks like classic heat related damage -the ring seized from lack of lube or possible ring gap aligned. what's the cylinder look like- scored?
if so you probably will want to find a new motor most lawn shops around here won't even try to bore a badly scored cylinder as when it heats it hardens and is hard on the boring bar equipment 128

Or the carb was set too lean...that'd be my guess since the eroded part is near the exhaust valve. The K321 in my 682 loader tractor has the same problem, but I'm probably going to run it like that for now. Won't matter for awhile since it hasn't been used since 2010 anyway

 ouch Jeff that sucks, not to sound hateful or anything but that is why I always pull the heads off a used motor after I get it or at least I try to just to check everything out. Question what is your exhaust look like? is it real short? that could be the problem you might want to check that valve while your at it since its on that one side, just a thought. Hope you get it fixed
