Money pit
Wow my 982 continues to give me grief. I just wanted a tractor to mow my grass with. Anyway, I was doing some work on the thing in my garage and noticed a big oil slick under the tractor next to the right wheel. Bought some hydro fluid to top off the hydro and after a couple of quarts saw the new fluid pouring out on the floor. DANG!!!
Ordered seals and bearings, started tearing it down and when spinning the axles I noticed both had significant axial run out. Pulled the axles and inspected the side with the oil leak. I noticed the seal was teribbly out of round biased towards the top. Pulled the seal and the bearing was GONE, as in not where it was supposed to be. Checked a little closer and found that the bearing was actually there but the entire needle bearing assembly was deep inside the axle housing. End result is the axle has been riding on the axle housing instead of the bearing. End result, I need two axle shafts and one axle housing for a 982. Checked Parts Tree, I'm halfway to a new mower if I purchase there. Anybody got used parts they are willing to part with. 1983 982 IH Cub Cadet,143 982 399, SN 715742. If I cant find reasonable priced replacement parts, this thing is headed for the lawn mower graveyard. |

Don't worry, those are common items. My bet is you will have less than 200 in this whole repair.
Cub classics on top of the page has the housings for 90.00$ per pair. I'm sure axles will be about the same.

Not necessarily a common failure, but like Terry said, relax. Those aren't hard to get parts.
Don't by any means junk it. 982's are very sought after machines. Next time, pay more attention to your machine. If you would gave checked that leak sooner, you likely would have saved yourself a lot of money. |

A 982 is one of the safer machines to sink money in, they seem to command higher resale prices as long as it is in reasonable condition and not butchered up. If it were mine, I'd also change the cork pump gasket while it is apart. If time permitted, I'd inspect the trunion, rag joints, and the little ball joint thingy that bolts to the flywheel while its all apart. Of course if your grass is needing mowing, you may only have time to do the minimum.

If you look around, you could probably fine a whole transaxle unit to swap in for it for $100 or less. I don't know the most in the world about the 82 series, but I think any hydro rear with a ported pump would do the job. Heck, I got a non-ported transaxle for free a couple years ago. Put an ad in the wanted section, and check local boneyards. Someone else may have done what you were considering.

Oh... and they are the "same", just different reduction gears on the hydro and the pinion shaft. Housings, axles, differential is all the same. (Hydro has a different output shaft on it, but it is the same model, so parts can be swapped out.) So if you need used axles, the GT axles are the same. Axle housings are the same. Hope that helps. |

That's what I was unsure of, haven't dealt with any supers yet. But, if you found a cheap transaxle, the parts you need would be a direct swap. Thanks guys for filling in the blanks!

Along the same lines, we know there is a ratio difference/tooth count between the hydro pinion and bull gear it drives.
That said, has anyone actually used a Gt gear ratio in a super? I'm thinking when fellers put super size tires (23x12x12) on a GT, they are effectively doing the same thing. For general use, would it actually be prohibitive? it is understood that the top speed would be higher, and the hydro would be working a tad harder. Just thinking out loud.---- |
