Default 2182 cub cadet

the idiot light is coming on my gen. system when a load is placed on it -- lights and/or mower deck clutch. it will go out if engine speed is run 3000 rpm or more ect. the lights seem to be a lesser elect load than the mower deck clutch. can I assume my alternator is going bad? do not know if this alternator has an internal voltage regulator. can have the alternator tested at autozone -- I think. looking for advise on this issue.

AutoZone will be no help. No internal regulator. You can check everything yourself with a voltmeter. If your interested in our help in doing it yourself, begin by finding the regulator. It's on the left side of the battery tray. It's a aluminum finned box with wires coming out. Let's start there.

Take the bulb out of the idiot light and forget about it.

If you're mowing the engine should be well over 3,000rpm anyway so I'm not sure what the issue is.

the local auto-zone has a test stand to check alternators -- if it has not disappeared. my assumption is an alternator should charge at idle engine speed. will do a little checking with a volt meter and see what turns up.

Get a manual for the tractor and the one for the engine. Most of the troubleshooting will be covered.

Guys, the cyclops tractors are known for this issue. It isn't real. The light has a tendency to be on because of how the system is wired. Just test battery voltage with a meter with the engine running. Should have around 14 volts at WOT, and around 13 at idle. If you do, it's fine. Don't go pulling parts off and running them around. Just take 30 seconds next time you use the tractor and check it. You'll likely find everything to be working fine. Then, do as Sam said and pull the bulb out.

My 2182 goes through periods where the volt light comes on and then it might go a couple months without coming on at all but the battery always stays charged.

I've seen this with my 1641 and 1864. False alarm for me also.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
