Need sediment bowl valve packing
hi all, The fuel sediment bowl shut off my Cub 100 was loose and everything was dirty so I removed and disassembled and cleaned it. The thumb valve packing was brown fibrous stuff and I dug that out. Now i need to replace it. Where can I get that (or, what can I substitute??) Also the bowl gasket. I did make one but would be nice to get the correct one. thanks

Well, I'm sure there will be some tut-tutting about the solution I used, but it works and has been working for 3 or 4 years. I needed packing on the shut off valve on my 125 and didn't have anything suitable handy.
I dug into the O-Ring assortment and found a pair that fit snugly on the valve shaft, then reassembled it and lightly tightened it. It didn't leak, and hasn't leaked yet. It has not even needed adjustment. I was concerned that gasoline would attack the rubber, but so far, no evidence of that happening. A temporary stop-gap that seems to have become permanent. |

cool dave. I actually found a thread oin this on another site, someone used teflon tape twisted into a string. I just installed that but wont know if it leaks until I install the bowl tomorrow. I too am thinking "what will todays gasoline attack" ... we'll see
It still would be nice to know what they used and if that's available (and if it withstands ethanol). ebay has brand new identical sediment bowls for $21 shipped. but... https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/c...all&th=1048487

You may be able to find "Garlock" valve packing material at a hardware store. It's a rope/twine type material impregnated with graphite. It was used years ago to repack valve stems and pump shafts. The gasket on a lot of those old style glass filters was made of cork. But you could use rubber or make one out of cardboard from a cereal box or the back cardboard from a pad of note paper.

After digging out the packing I went with teflon tape wrapped because tjats what I had. I read that teflon is not affected by ethanol. Also used it under the fuel tube compression fittings which have some black rubber donuts in there. Added the teflon wraps left the rubber.
Made my own bowl gasket with thick gasket material. No leaks (after three tries lol) No leaks so far

Hi George, thanks. Thats for the sediment bowl only?
I think the teflon does the trick, I wonder what was the fuel valve packing and can that be had? And what about the donuts in the fuel tube ends from sediement bowl to carb? They dont look like regular o-rings... anyway the probably get eaten by ethanol anyway even if I could get the originals...

Ya, bowl gasket. Cork gasket material comes in a roll at TSC. The packing I've used was graphite impregnated rope packing for packing valve stems as mentioned. IIRR the crush fittings were neoprene hose. Someone sells it, thinking it might be one of our sponsors.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
