Default How much is a 1440 worth??

Hey guys I have a 1440 that's in good condition minus a smoking engine. It has 900hrs. More than likely its the rings. My question is how much should I ask for it? I was thinking 350?!? Thanks, Brad

If you were closer I'd make you an offer. Otherwise, if I were selling it with a smoking engine, depending how bad/how much oil is burned, I wouldn't do any more than $350.

BTW, pics help. If it's in great cosmetic shape, maybe more. If it's missing a headlight, has cracked panels, dents, etc then less.

Put it on Craigs list for $400.00 and take $350.00 if some one wants to beat you down.

Default Update

Ok guys, I need some help making a decision. I am a gear head by trade(snowmobiles, hotrods etc) so I never ended up putting the 1440 for sale as I have been thinking of doing a full restoration on one of them. I have some options here. Sorry if this gets too long. I have two 1440's. Both in good condition(no broken plastics or dents etc). The one with 900hrs has the smoking engine. The one I use on a regular basis has 800hrs on it. Is 800hrs on a decently taken care of tractor a lot? Is the engine passed its prime?...So, should I just sell the one that doesn't smoke and make some profit on? How much should I ask for it? If I sell that one, I would purchase a new engine for the smoking one. If I go that route, what engine should I purchase? I appreciate the input guys! Brad

I doubt you will get enough out of selling the 1440 to even come close to buying a new engine for the other one. You'll probably have enough for a used engine. But why sell it when it already has the engine you need for the other 1440?

If I wanted to keep the one with the smoking problem, I would put a engine in it. I would not try to rebuild it. Small engine warehouse has 3 options and the prices are reasonable. Also I would keep the other for parts because you would come near needing the parts and no one would give you much for it even if it is a good mower. They would rather spend 2K on a XT1 that would not last as long as the 1440. I looked at the XT-1's at Tractor Supply today. Too much money for what they are.

I may have an interesting answer for you....

Last year, my 1994 1440 with about 740 hours in very nice condition, needed a new alternator. In the heat of the summer, I called my local Cub dealer and got a quote to decide if I would do it myself or have them do it. With a good quote and not a lot of extra time, I elected to have them do it.

Days later, they picked the machine up and the driver wants to talk about my machine seeing that it is old but in good condition. He asks me if I want to sell it and I said no but thanks. Two days later, the owner of the dealership calls and says he saw my 1440 being worked on and asks me if I want to sell it...he'll give me 2k. I say thanks and decline. He then says he'll give me 3k for the machine. I stopped him at $3750. I suspect had I been interested, we could have been in the $4500 zone.

I believe the crappier the newer garden tractors become and increasing scarce old iron in good condition becomes -- even when 25-35 years old, you're not going to see $400-$800 tractors in decent condition any more because they are going to become too valuable. It's only a matter of time.

And I would not sell my 1440 for $5000!

You should have taken the five grand and ran before the guy sobered up. A 1440 is the entry level Cyclops and will never be worth that imo

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
