Default 1882 Meltdown

My neighbor was using my 1882 yesterday when he called me asking if I had any issues with it lately. I told him not really other than sometimes on a startup the starter gear doesn't fully engage. Well he told me there was smoke from under the hood. I asked him to just leave it. When I got home from work I took a look. there was a short that melted a wire in the ground circut. Anyone have any thoughts on places to look at is a "common issue"? Anyone have a wiring diagram I can refer to. I can google but I'd rather trust members here instead. Attaching photos so you can see what happened.

It depends on what the ground was connected to. My cub cadet dealer told me one time he was working on the first cub diesels to come out, 782D or 1512 and the customer was complaining of slow/hard starting. He had the hood open while checking it out and when he had it turning over, he noticed the throttle cable wire/core was glowing red. He had a bad ground to the engine and it just found whatever ground path it could back from the starter. Do you have any other bad grounds?

Not sure about other grounds. I am going to start digging into it tonight and tomorrow to try and find the issue. Need to find a wiring diagram so I know what goes where. Not sure if the starter shorted out and that caused the issue? Time to break out the meter and see what's going to ground.

I would be willing to bet your starter engagement issue is the cyclops' "click". Easily fixed with a relay wired in the starter circuit. There are a couple of threads with info on the mod.

Well it appears the starter has an internal dead short. from the +12v terminal on the starter to the body of the starter there is a 0 ohm reading.

Don't be too quick to condemn the starter, those winding are pretty heavy on the armature.
Might want to give it a spin with a good set of jumper cables to see if it is indeed bad,
then you will know for sure.
Put the positive on the stud nut and touch the negative to the body.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
