Default Mower Woes
Evening fellas, im a new owner of a 104 and 125. These are my first garden tractors. I have been reading a few articles saying a cub of that era is prone to scalping and the blades don't turn fast enough to give a good cut. Any of you guys experience anything like that? Any suggestions or solutions? Thanks.

you run the motors around 3k rpm to 3600... norm op range. they cut just fine.

scalping is too low of a deck normally.. and or the front roll is ware down. rear deck wheels ware down.

i run my cubs around 3k. cuts just fine... i don't sharpen my blades but once a year. unless i chew a rock or root up here n there.

some yards bleed rocks. ask me how i know.

Ah, articles by the ill informed.

Given that mowing technology has developed and has been enhanced since the 1960's, the older machines cut just fine. Scalping is a operator's problem.

I mow with a 123 with a 42" 3 blade deck and with a 2180 that has a 42" two blade deck.

Both mow equally well, but I can mow faster with the 2180. Of course it has 50% more horsepower than the 123 too. Just have to go a bit slower when I mow with the 123. I run both of them at wide open throttle to mow.

As far as scalping, either you have an uneven yard or the deck is set too low.
Also could be that the anti-scalping wheels on the deck are set too high.
