Must be the Carb..1440 is running but...
Some of you will remember that I bought a low hour 1440 from the original owner last fall and it wasn't running. With low hours and the overall condition very good I paid the man and brought it home.
Well I finally got around to pulling the fuel filter, replacing some new fuel lines, using new gas and pulling the top off the carb and cleaning the varnish looking stuff from inside, the needle and float. I also decided to put new plugs in it and gave it a try. It runs and sounds pretty good. My question -- It will only run with the choke completely closed. Is there another part of the carb I have to clean that I couldn't get to from the top? Thanks for any help.

On a Vanguard you should be able to get at everything from the top. Make sure the shut off solenoid is retracting when you turn the key on. Make sure all of the passages are clean. Carb cleaner, a brake bleeder suction tool, compressed air and a set of model drills are pretty much my go to tools. Just had the same issue with my BIL's 2180, the inside of the fuel line between the filter and pump had started to flake of and the carb had little bits of rubber in it.

Thanks Sam.
Now that I know it runs I'm going to rip into it and replace all the fuel lines, filters, etc. By the looks of the air intake I would guess that its been over heated at least once.
