Governor issue - B&S 18.5hp twin
I recently acquired a Cub Cadet 1610 with a 18.5 HP B&S twin stuffed in there. Apparently came from a Huskee. Engine is a model 42A707 type 123801 It is not completely connected up and I don't think it ever ran in this tractor.
My problem (so far) is with the governor. It came with the throttle connected direct to the carb. There is a governor lever from the engine above the exhaust but it is not connected up. The governor mechanism was taken off but I have it, maybe missing springs and linkages. I can see lugs on engine where it is supposed to mount up. So my questions are 1) do I really need the governor to be connected, and 2) how is it supposed to be connected up. A photo or parts diagram would be ideal. Any help would be appreciated. Biz |

YES! The governor MUST be hooked up! As far as pics... can't help with that.

Adding some pics.
The first one shows what it is like now. Throttle connected direct to carb, governor lever arm disconnected. You can see the 2 mounting holes in block for the governor assembly. Throttle cable comes in from left (right side of tractor) I have the linkage below (#222). What I need help with is knowing what to connect to what. How to connect throttle to governor assembly, which place exactly. How to connect governor arm to governor assembly How to connect carb up Where do springs go I think the pin that can be seen in the governor lever arm rides in the curved channel of the assembly. I do have the linkage, item 216 but not sure where it goes. The other problem is when this engine was installed, the exhaust apparently was from another unit and it gets in the way of the governor assembly. The previous owner tried modifying the governor assembly by cutting off part of the bottom. I think he may have given up, because it was not installed. Any help or photos appreciated! I did get the motor running but worried about running it without governor connected up. |

Ok, first of all from the pics, I have no idea what's missing, or what you need. I searched the parts book, but the way to book is layed out, it doesn't give any helpful pics. Since this cub didn't use this motor, it would just be luck that someone on here would have one of these motors and could help you. My suggestion is to pull that motor out. Sell it as running, and go find the correct motor for your tractor. Check with the sponsors at the top of the page, they may help you find a motor, or have one. Or post in the "wanted" section for a motor. Find the correct engine and we can more than help! Good luck!

Thanks Jonathan. I'm not ready to throw in the towel quite yet. The governor parts are found in the Briggs & Stratton engine page. Just looking to see how they are connected in a standard B&S engine to see if I can adapt to mine.

That's cool Dave. Although, I can't help you identify what parts you need or how they are supposed to look, I can help with the fundamentals. Be careful "modifying" your governor. Just modify the throttle control cable. Governors are sensitive little suckers, and if you modify it even a little, it can really affect how the engine performs. Try and get it set up correctly for that particular engine, then adjust the tractor side to work with it. As always, good luck!!

Good advice, thanks! I'm going to try and visit shops with mowers that have a similar engine and peek under the hood to see how the governor connects up. Looks like Sears sells a higher HP version of this engine (24hp) in some of their models, maybe the governor setup is similar.
