Default PTO

Hello to all. I have a 18 year old (I think) LT2180 which I mow 3 acres of 14% grade with.Goes very well with bar tires, no issues there. However, I have an issue this year which prevents me from keeping up with it. I got my first mow of the season done about two weeks ago, and while doing so I found the pto was being....difficult to engage? Finally got to the point it would not engage at all, so no mowing for two weeks now. I took a leap of faith and replaced the pto relay and switch, no deal. Still will not engage. Am I looking at replacing the clutch assembly? These are pretty expensive, I could probably find one used on ebay but why? I have checked the wiring, all looks dirty but not damaged. Oh, one other thing, with the mower running and parking brake set, I can pull the pto switch and it will kill the motor, so I don't think the seat switch is an issue.Question: is the reverse switch wired to the seat switch as well? I need help, my neighbors look at my lawn with disdain, the bluegrass has gotten over a foot tall on my road frontage (we've had lots of rain here in Cynthiana) (I call it Cyn-City) Another question: is there another relay between the dash and the clutch? I'm thinking of buying something else, but all I can afford are belt driven ones at the moment, not sure how well they'd do on my hill. Thanks for all the advice.

As a starting point, with the key in the run position but without the motor running, and all other things set (seat, brake, etc) as if you were mowing, can you hear the PTO clutch click when you engage and release it with the PTO switch??

Check to see if the PTO pulley spins freely on the crankshaft...

Doesn't it have a brake on the PTO?

To answer all the questions: The clutch does not click when I engage the pto (key on, motor off sitting on the seat.) I don't think the pto spins on the shaft, it won't as far as I know. I had a belt issue when I first got it (used), ended up being an idler pulley. But I changed a couple belts before I figured that one out. Don't recall the clutch being 'free'.

use a test light or a volt meter and check for power and ground at the wiring plug for the clutch , if no voltage then back track the wiring to find the problem ..if you have voltage and ground then the clutch is most likely bad. the wire plug on the clutch may be melted

Test light lit up immediately. Guess the clutch has to go.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
