Default The Original lives

Finally had some time to mess with my new O. The whole story and pics are here: http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=10527
I wanted to at least see if it ran at all just so I knew where I was with the project. I took the carb apart and was surprised to see it was actually clean inside. So was the gas tank. Whoever parked this thing actually drained the gas. Never seen that before... So I cleaned the carb and reassembled. The wire harness was melted so I unhooked everything except for the large starter wire that goes to the s/g. I cleaned the points and plug and put some gas in it. I put a jumper form the battery to the coil. It cranked over a bunch and then I got a big bright orange flame out of what used to be the muffler. I guess the ignition is working. Cranked it some more and it eventually sounded like it was trying to run, but would only fire while the s/g was turning the engine. I messed with the adjustments on the carb and tried again. It popped right off. A few more adjustments and it runs almost perfect. Idles smooth and cranks right up when the throttle is pegged. It's got a pretty good bark to it with no muffler. I can't believe someone was running it that way. No smoke either. Score.
Then I went on to investigate why the clutch wouldn't disengage as was stated by the PO. The linkage from the clutch to the pedal was bent on the end with the 90* bend in it. It cracked in the middle of the bend and straightened out to a 45* angle instead. I heated it, bent it back and welded it. Reinstalled and now the clutch disengages. If I had a drive belt for it I could have actually driven it yesterday. I can't believe that simple little thing made this machine get parked.
The only other mechanical issues to sort out the rear axle seals, spindle bushings, tie rod ends, and front wheel bushings. Those are all easy fixes. After that it's just clean and paint. Not bad for $90!

That's great for $90! I'm glad you was able to get it running again! I think someone was looking for a reason to get a new machine and made it seem like the problems were greater then they actually were.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
