Tiller for 982
I really appreciate the help I receive here. I feel like all I do is ask questions and never contribute anything so I apologize for that. I am looking for a tiller to fit on a 982 or Original. Them are the 2 tractors I have left. I have a 982 without a PTO and an original with a creeper. From my research it seems nothing will fit the 982 without some modification. Would I be able to put a #1 or #2 on the original? It has a 3 PT with adapter.

On the 982, You would have to get a one of those self powered ones that was offered on a 1912.The original would be under powered to run a #1 tiller without extensions, and still not sure how the tiller gearbox would mount up.There was also a self powered one made.

If your 982 doesn't have a rear lift you're probably better off getting a Troy-Built Horse tiller unless you have a massive sized garden.
The Cub Cadet model 400 tiller is self powered but you will need a sleeve hitch or cat 0 rear lift. There were also some Sears versions of the 400 tiller too and also a DR tiller that has a built in electric lift but they are crazy expensive.

I turned an International tiller into self powered for my 149. Since I already had the engine , it was cheaper than buying all the belts.
I’ve since added a set of outboard tines for a full 42” cut and outboard bearings to take the load off the gearbox. |

The 982 does have a cat 0 3 PT but no PTO. If there was a small modification needed I could do it but I don't want it to be a big project. That tiller with the motor on top is really cool. I see some really ingenious stuff on this site. Some people, including myself, can't take no for an answer. Where there is a will there is a way. Thanks

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
