Default New to me 147

First off I am not a collector! I have a 108 that I have had 15 yrs, not restored, but cleaned up and repainted with original colors and decals. I use it to move trailers and boats around the property, then there is the LT1018 for mowing. I read this forum of knowledge regularly and watch C LIST for cycles, boats and tractors. Lots of boats and cycles but very few Cubs in central FL. I found this 147 on the west coast 125 mi one way, it was with the same family all it's life in PA. The son moved to FL with this well used but complete 147 with a mower deck, he had a very small yard so he was selling it. Every thing worked but the electric lift, so now it resides in Kissimmee. Now after a lot of reading here and research, I decided to replace the electric lift with manual. I would like it to keep it original. The lift works except for the damaged $99.00 spiroid gear. A $99.00 gear on a $300.00 tractor????? Now for the big question, have any of you GURU'S tried welding or brazing new teeth on this gear an using a Dremel to reshape the teeth?

thanks in advance--CURT

I've seen people try to weld gears. It never works.

Certainly these electric lift were not made by IH.
Maybe Duff-Norton?
I would bet the internal parts are standard to the actual manufacturer if they still exist.

A 108, an LT1018 and a 147... I hate to burst your bubble, but you are a collector!

My 147 has a manual lift and it works great. I have no intentions of ever putting an E lift back on it.

(that's mine on the header pic.)

There are several new replacement lifts on the market that can be adapted to fit your 147. If you start replacing individual pieces on your OEM lift you may end up with George Washington's axe.

Word of advice: Don't compare the original price you paid for your Cub against any repairs you need to make. It's really not that relevant.

Compare the cost to a new tractor with the same capability. Now $99 sounds cheap

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
