Arkie, with an 1811!!
Hey everyone,
I bought my 1811 last weekend. I LOVE IT!! I'd been running a Craftsman with a 42" deck and had no idea how much time I'd been wasting on mowing. The 1811 cut my acre in about a third the amount of time it took with the el cheapo sears. I've been lurking here doing some research and wow what a resource this site is. I'm already lining up the materials to change the filters, the fluids, etc. I'm going to get HyTrans tomorrow and my Diff gasket will be in next week so I guess that project will have to wait until next weekend. The tractor works perfectly with only one problem I've discovered. I was mowing a part of my yard the other evening and started smelling something. Turns out it was the deck belt and it was shredded. It had a brand new belt when I bought it and I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before. Less than 4 hours on the belt!!! The mower has the 50" deck and it looks like the mule pulleys have been replaced. The mower was cutting fine before this happened. I can only think of two things: I raised the mower deck with the PTO engaged, or the previous owner bought too short of belt. Any thoughts? Looking forward to hanging out here more and feeding the "addiction" |

Hi Arkie..
Welcome to the OCC and the world of IH Cub Cadets. I'm down in East Texas in the tall pines. What you didn't tell us was what brand/type belt you had on your 1811. If it wasn't a L&G belt, I know what the problem was. Automotive, utility or fractional horsepower belts are a NO-NO on a mower!!The Cub Cadet 954-3006 Lawn & Garden Belt is the recommended one for your 1811 with a 50" deck. Also, if your yard has pine cones, sweet gum balls, etc., they can get into the belt at a spindle pulley and cause the belt to twist & jam which can cause the belt to shred, regardless of the belt brand or type. BTDT!... You need to make sure your yard is "clean". Myron B www.ccsupplyroom.com

Welcome. You can raise the deck with the pto engaged and it shouldln't hurt the belt any.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
