Snow thrower
Well, i got my FREE thrower home and unloaded today. Turns out that it is a QA42A. The only thing wrong with it is that it need the gearbox rebuilt. My question is: Is the right angle gearbox for the 1A tiller the same as the gearbox on the thrower? It looks as if I can take the pulley off and use the tiller gearbox on the thrower until I find another, or rebuild the one on it.

NO....A tiller gearbox & a snowthrower gearbox are different with different Output RPM's.

Then does any one know where to get parts for these at a reasonable price? I will need the gear that connects to the output shaft. This would be part 4 if the image comes through.

The Bad & the Good:
First: The Gears are no longer available from Cub Cadet. The gear boxes are physically the same, tiller/thrower. But the ratios are different: 2:1 ratio = 15 Teeth---30 teeth-- thrower. 1.5:1 ratio= 20 Teeth---30 Teeth—Tiller. The tiller box has a 3/8” shorter input shaft, and a 3/8” longer output shaft.(approx.) You can use the tiller Gear box if you change the 15 tooth chain sprocket on the thrower driveshaft to a 12 tooth sprocket. How do I know this? Because I have done it and it worked well with a QA 42A on my 782 just last month. |

Hate to be a pain about this, but 1 more question for now. Couldn't I just replace the input pulley with a smaller one? I have seen the speed up pulleys that are 3", wouldn't one of those work the same?

Sorry, No.
Because the tiller Gear box is too fast to start with, and if you drive it with a smaller input pulley you are making it even faster. If you do the math you will see that. Thrower Gearbox: Motor is say 3600 rpm with a 4 1/2" pulley. Gearbox is say 4-1/2" pulley so it is also 3600 rpm. input The gear box it 2:1 so it is outputting @ 1800 That is turning a 15 tooth sprocket to a 24 tooth sprocket on the auger. 1:6 ratio= 1800 divided by 1.6= 1125 rpm.s Tiller box: Same 4 1/2" motor pulley=3600 Same gearbox 4 1/2" pulley 3600 1:5 ratio = 2400 Rpm gearbox output That is driving a 12 tooth (instead of 15) sprocket to 24 tooth sprocket on auger= 2:1 reduction 2400 divided by 2 = 1200 rpm! So it is about 75 rpm's faster and that is good as it helps throw the snow farther and is generally accepted as better. Now these are approximate pulley sizes as close as I cam remember measuring them. I hope this gives you a ballpark picture. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
