Add some Hytran after cork gasket job?
How necessary is it to remove check valves and add some hytran after cork gasket job?
Replaced the gasket and so the trans is basically empty at this point. It has been suggested to me to remove both check valves and pour some fluid down in both ports, then reinstall valves and rotate the driveshaft (or in my case the coupling arm since there is no engine in the tractor right now) in the direction of normal rotation (I think this is counter-clockwise but not certain till I refer to my notes) to make sure the pump is primed. Never had the check valves out before so wanted to make sure I need to do this (?) Thanks... |

When I rebuilt my hydro a few years ago, (cork gasket, new rear gasket, hytran, etc) I didn't bother with that. I filled the rear to the plug, ran it for a while, checked the level and added accordingly. Others may disagree but I don't see that it's necessary.

I didn't do that either. Filled it up from the dipstick port. Actually never heard of it before.

Sounds good to me...I'll just fill 'er up and go from there.

you can also take the square plate off the top of the rear end and take the pipe plug in the cover off, fill thru top to point of dribbling out that pipe plug....

My experience a couple weeks ago was I thought it was a good idea to refill the trans. through the relief valve ports also after changing the cork gasket ,I stuck the funnel in the hole and started pouring, the funnel held about a pint of which about 4 oz's went into the the relief valve port and the rest onto the garage floor ! Now maybe I did something wrong but it sure didn't seem like this was a very direct path to refilling the gear case. Needless to say I reinstalled the relief valves , cleaned up the mess and filled the gear case through the check plug like I've done for 40 years and everything worked fine ! It was when I read this post that I realized that others must have tried this also, hopefully with better success !

Thanks..but wondering if it's even necessary to do other than just fill it through the rear cover plug.

I believe the concept is when the hydro is dissembled for internal work,
and thus everything is dry inside, filling some oil into the relief valves insures that there is some lube inside so parts inside don't start off dry. If I am changing just the cork gasket, I keep it upright so little oil is lost. in other words,setting the differential on the back plate where the drawbar attaches. |

Overflowed out of the port I was funneling into ! The port was full to the top and till I pulled the funnel and got a finger over the end it spewed all over ! I agree if you have the hydro unit itself apart definitely lube up the inside with some hytran before bolting the case shut to avoid a dry start up !
