Default Bad 982 day

The last time I had my 982 running was August of 2010 and it was surging quite a bit. I tried to get it running last June but realized that the starter was bad. So over this past winter I finally pulled the engine and replaced the starter and while I was at it, I went ahead and pulled the carb and intake off to clean it. It seem clean so I put it back together. Last week I decided to pull the petcock out of the tank and replace it and the bushing. It was clogged up which would account for the surging. I got all that done and put some gas in it yesterday and finally got it running. It was running the best I had ever seem it until a big nasty knock developed while running it at full throttle. I shut it down as fast as I could but the damage had been done. I pulled the heads and found what looked like pieces of a lock washer in one of the cylinders. I guess it fell in when i had the intake off. luckily, the cylinder bore is ok. It just mangled the top of the piston and the head. I found some heads on E-bay but the piston is going to be fun to find. I can't seem to find any for sale anywhere. Yeah Rah!!!! All this after I had issues with the engine I just put in the 782 and was contemplating selling all my cub cadet stuff in one huge lot. It seems it never ends!

Did it put a hole in the piston head or is it something you can smooth out without a complete tear down??? Same for the heads...

Pics will do wonders on coming up with a solution...

No hole in the piston but the gouges are probably a good 1/8" deep. It could be smoothed out but i'm afraid of it burning a hole through the top of the piston where it is thinner.

Good thing is that these onans aren't built like the kohlers. I can drop the oil pan and remove the piston and rod from there.

I'd pull that one and if you can get a new one all good but if you can't as long as it isn't holed, cracked or have a crushed ring groove I'd smooth it up, put it back in and run it. I've seen a lot worse than that run just fine.

Well the tractor is back up and running. I'm currently between jobs, so I've had some free time to work on it. I was hoping I could salvage the old piston but the ring grooves were crushed. I got lucky and found a piston with the correct casting number on ebay for $30. Had to buy rings for $25, and new head gaskets for $32, and I'm now back up and running. I let it run for 15 minutes and now I'm waiting for it to cool down so I can retorque the head bolts. After that it's all putting all the engine tins back on. That should be fun to do with the engine in. I took them off with the engine in. Now I hope I can get them back on with it in.

Glad ya got it back up and running...Also...With the Onans it seems the split intakes have a tendency to leak and cause surging...just an fyi...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
