Kohler Command in a 982 Details Needed
Hello Guys,
Well, I have a CH22 motor to go into my 982. Has anyone done this and do you have any pics, details or measurements that you would be willing to share with me? I have seen this done in a couple of tractors before but I don't want this to be a hack job. I could really use some help if anyone has done this. I do plan on using this "MANLY MOCHINE" to cut grass so the front PTO measurement is going to be important as well as the wiring and driveline mods. including drilling the motor mounting plate, drive shaft coupler etc. Regards, Joe |

Never done it in a super but I installed a CH18 in my 682. Best I can tell you is get the PTO in the correct location. Then mount the motor to the mount plate and not sure on a super how tall the motor mount spacers need to be. You will still need to make a custom drive shaft for it. The whole project is all about the initial mock up. Wish I could help you with measurements. I never wrote any dimensions down. The front PTO and getting the motor at the right height and centered is critical.Then you can build the driveshaft. It was about a 4 week project plugging away at it part time. The end result is great. I put dual exhausts on mine and it sounds like a Harley.

Joe,
I am working on a similar project for my 1541. The frame and measurements are the same from the steering tower forward. I bought an engine mounting plate from a 1864 / 2284. I am 99% sure that this will take care of proper engine placement. It should work for you as well since the 2284 is a cyclops super. The PTO from a Magnum will work on the Command. I am pretty sure that you can use the battery heat shield you have. The muffler will be the hardest thing. The muffler from the 1864 might work, but they are $200. The muffler heat shields will be a problem as well. This is less important for you since the 982 front end is all metal. Again the 1864 heat shield may be good enough. These are hard to find since the upper shield is no longer available from cub. I am collecting all the stuff I need over the winter and will start the project in April. I will detail the process as I proceed. |

I have a CH18 in my 582 and ran into similar issues (and more because it was a gear drive). I don't currently have a muffler on it, just a header pipe (which I don't recommend because it is deafening, despite the fact that it sounds really cool) but you could get a used 1864 muffler and redo the outlet to match up with a hole in the grille. Someday I'm going to get a piece of 3" exhaust tubing and some 1" pieces and make my own muffler for mine.

Thanks for the info guys.
Will start getting some of this stuff together next weekend. I am taking the motor out of the 3240 that was listed for sale on here for a while. I sell off the rest of the tractor and deck as roller minus the motor. Did anyone have issues with the battery? The one that is in the 3240 is huge and I am sure that it won't fit into the battery box on the 982. Hey Matt, PM me your mailing address and I will send you some 3 inch pipe and some one inch if they have it where my wife works. I will get some just to have on hand in case I need to do anything and I am sure that they have scrap laying around that will be more than enough for what we would need it for. I will take plenty of pictures and post them as I progress through this project. Thanks, Joe |

My problem trying to get the command in the 1872 was the rear couplier to work with drive shafts.

Hey Vince, I think I have the problem solved with the coupler. I am going to get a newer shaft from a 2000 series tractor, cut it and adapt it to the older original shaft. This way both ends will fit just fine. Got to do the mock up yet, so I will let you know what I figure out.
I do know someone that has done the retrofit in his tractor, he is just very protective of all of the work that was done and he won't show me much, but I have noticed that his tractor is hard to start as he uses the smaller battery that fits in the 982 box. So I have to come up with a way to make sure that I can put the right size battery in this thing. I am hoping that someone on here will have some good info on the electrical hook up for this change. Don't want to make any "pretty blue lights" or damage expensive parts. |

The 2000 series flywheel adapter should work...I think the bolt pattern is the same as the ball bushing thing that bolts to the flywheel on an M18. You might need to make a custom-length driveshaft, but I don't think any other mods would be necessary.

Elaborate on the "pretty blue lights". Like electrical shorts. I used auto sized battery cables and haven't had any issues yet. Just get the largest CCA garden tractor battery. I think I got mine from Autozone and it is 360 CCA. I never cared for the battery being that far away from the starter that is why I ran such big cables.

A normal lawn and garden battery will be fine...if your friend's tractor spins over that hard, something is wrong. I had a 220CCA battery in my 582 w/ CH18.
You can pretty much wire it like any other CC with magneto ignition, like an 1872 for instance, but you'll need an extra wire for the fuel solenoid in the carb. |
