Default Cub key

Ive got a 149 cub that uses the 3 prong ignition,Ive lost the keys, but it doesnt take the older indak key that starts my murray and mtd, it looks like a regular key for a door or hatch. any suggestions other than replacing the ignition. The 149 is dated late 73. thanks. bob

Bob:

I believe you have a Aftermarket Ignition Switch.

If you want the original switch, use: IH-60736-C3

Bob, I thought I had to replace my switch as well because I did not have a key for my 100. I brought the switch into the cub dealer and they had a key that worked perfectly for $5. My ignition switch has 3 prongs on the back. You may want to try the dealer for a key before you replace the switch.

As far as I know they all take the same key. If your switch hasn't been changed your CC dealer should have just what you need.

You can also try any CaseIH dealer since it's the same key used by many Farmall tractors too. There are also many other motorized vehicles that used the similar switches, like snowmobiles and forklifts and other mowers. I can't remember who else for sure, but Paul Bell posted a list on another forum some months back. I think the brand he mentioned sold the keys 2 to a pack for about $3 total.

Somehow I missed that... Maybe Paul will post it here, so those of us who missed it will have the information.

I swear I don't know how he (Paul) finds out all the stuff he finds out... What's more, for the life of me I don't know how he keeps track of it all. He must have a photographic memory. The guy knows EVERYTHING!!!

I will take the ignition to my nearest cub dealer and see if they have a key for it. My nearest dealer is about 38 miles away. Need some hytran ultra anyways. thanks for the input. bob

You can also get Hytran from Case industrial dealers too.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
