LR Axle Noise & wobble in Late Cyclops Tractors
Late productions Cyclops Cub Cadets may experience a rattling noise and feeling of loose wheel coming from the left rear axle and/or differential carrier. This is due to a different differential flange used on the left side of the bolt together differential carrier case than used on mid and early productions units. The bore in the flange housing which the left side spider gear is set in to allows for .075 movement of spider gear (vs .010 on earlier models) allowing the LR axle to travel around in the axle bore of the carrier. Note, in picture early and late production of bolt together carriers and aluminum carrier bearing cap used on late production. This came to my attention when mowing a few weeks ago. I collect and have several Supers to include (6) 2182's, 4 of which are mid production and 2 late production with only a little over 200 hours on each (plastic wheel flairs, & tunnel cover). I use the 4 mid productions for mowing, plowing, snow blowing and loader work. I decided to place a mower on one of the late production tractors and immediately noticed a noise coming from the LR wheel acting like it was loose. Checked lug nuts (OK), raised tractor and checked axles for movement. This is when I found issue with LR axle. Outer axle bearing was good, yes there was in and outward movement of axle like there always is, but I was able to rock the rear axle by pushing and pulling on the top and bottom of the tire at the same time making the axle rattle in the differential carrier. This was on the Left side only, right side was fine. I checked the other late production 2182 and same thing! So I checked all 4 mid production 2182's and they were all fine!. This is when I checked into differential carriers used finding all the same part numbers but also finding the different (updated) carrier side flange used on late production models that allows side spider to travel around with axle. I don't think there will be an issue, as I mentioned each has only little over 200 hours on them, with the cure being replace the carrier side flange with earlier one (lot of work). Thought some of you may want to know and are experiencing same issue.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
