Default Honda GTX390 into a 149?

Thinking ahead to winter projects and one of them is to split the 149 and go through the hydro and do some structural work on the rear of the frame. I'd also like to go over the front end and try to eliminate as many rattles as possible. I will likely pull the motor and do some work on the pan and do the valve guides that didn't get done during rebuild.

I've been looking around for small engines for a couple of other projects and have come across a few (real) Hondas There is a GT 390 close to me for a decent price. This unit is a single cylinder rated at 11.7 HP. I don't have a PTO on the front as I changed that to a direct coupled hydraulic pump for the FEL.

The tractor is used mainly with the loader. But I have a self propelled tiller, a 10" Brinley plow and a sleeve hitch mounted, single row disc with eight big blades.

Now the Kohler claims 14 HP. So the question is, would the newer HOV, electronic ignition engine 11.7 Honda do the work that the K321 does.

I have machining and fabbing equipment, so that's not a big obstacle.

Note: Title should say GT 390, not GTX.

I don’t see why not. 99% of people would tell you to go with the original engine if possible, but of course you’re going to be using your 149 for real work and not just for show. Those honda engines weigh a whole lot less than that K321 so it may not want to make sharp turns on loose ground, but the FEL probably will make up for it. As for power, people put Honda clones on pulling tractors all the time and your honda would be more efficient than the K321 it came with. And last but not least, if It’s got electric start you’re golden. Do what suits you best!

A real Honda engine is a good engine, but it sure as hell is not a cast iron Kohler that has stood the test of time.
totally different animals.
Will it work? yes, and prolly for as long as you want.

That’s true George. But I’m not sure I can stand the time that the Kohler is testing me.

Actually, a pretty good looking 682 with a deck and tiller just came up. For $600 Canadian pesos, I could cut my “shaking” time way down. And if I could get the deck high enough to mow clover to about 8”, it would a great asset. And then I’d leave the k321 where it is

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
