Default 1711 problems

Hello, new member here and first order i would like to thank yall for having me. Me and my 1711 need help! She goes through oil quick. Smokes pretty decent. Hard to start. Under the motor is wet with oil but no drips to the ground. Did a compression test but it was cold got 50 on one side 55 on the other. Tried to get it to start to warm it up and do the compression test right with it warm and smoke rolled from under the seat. Now I get a click every now and then when I turn the key and sometimes nothing at all. Eletrical is not my strong point. Picked her up for 500 bucks and got 2 years use out of her. 1250 hours on the clock. Really don't want to dump a ton of money in her. Just looking for some insight, I want to save her if I can on a budget, she's in nice shape other wise.

The smoke under the seat is probably from the starter solenoid. Sounds like an overhaul or repower is in order if the compression fails test.

First off.... Welcome to OnlycubCadets! you won't find a better place to find information and help for your cub cadet.

Didn't the 1711 come powered by a 17HP Kohler 2-cyl ?

It is a Kohler KT17 series 2. Would the solenoid cause the sometimes click sometimes nothing at all when I turn the key. What is the best way to test a solenoid on these?

I don't know about the sometimes clicking part, but I know the smoke had to come from the solenoid or maybe the battery? Someone with more electrical knowledge will help u determine the cause.

Check the battery cable connections for corrosion. Make sure terminals, posts and cables are free of corrosion and that the connections are tight. Is the battery fully charged and able to hold the charge? Don't forget to check battery acid levels too.

U could jumper the solenoid after you perform the above recommendation if it still doesn't engage the starter.

I'd say your engine is worn out. That's why it's hard to start and going through oil like crazy. Your putting a lot of stress on the starting system by cranking on it for long periods of time and that's probably why it's smoking under the seat. Like others have said, time for a overhaul or repower. I wouldn't worry with a compression test.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
